The Black Flâneur
Part I : Black Face White Space
This work is about the Black body’s ability to roam freely. Based on a month spent in Venice, it explores the experience of being Black in predominately white spaces, in particular how you experience these spaces when you enter into them aware of the nuances you feel and the reactions that you garner based on your race. And what is this feeling, of being over-exposed and unwanted actually based on.
It’s about the feelings of being 'other' and the range of emotions from defiance to fear that I felt as a traveler of colour.
