When I Was Her I Glittered Honestly (2019)

When I Was Her I Glittered Honestly is a text written in 2018. The poem is the opening act of a play looking at the actions which are fundamental to the nurturing of Black girls, and the things we do with the maternal influences in our lives, such as sitting between a mothers knees and having your hair cainrowed before school, or having your skin creamed after a bath.

I have been far away (clip below) uses the poem as a soundtrack and explores the idea of ritual and gesture as a way to both summon and preserve memories. Looking at the action of creaming (which is a necessity for Black skin as opposed to a luxury) this is a journey of intimacy.
